Kohei Nawa

Der japanische Künstler Kohei Nawa, geboren 1975 in Osaka, zählt zu den innovativsten Bildhauern seiner Generation. Nach einem Studium der Bildhauerei promovierte er 2003 an der Kyoto City University of Arts. Heute lehrt er als Professor an der Kyoto University of the Arts und leitet die interdisziplinäre Kreativplattform Sandwich Inc., die er 2009 in Kyoto gegründet hat.

Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte Nawa mit seiner Werkserie »PixCell«, in der er die Oberfläche als Schnittstelle im digitalen Zeitalter thematisiert. Seine Arbeiten – darunter »Direction«, »Force«, »Biomatrix« und »Foam« – vereinen Materialität, Leben und Kosmos. Zu seinen herausragenden Projekten zählen der Pavillon »Kohtei«, die Performances »Vessel«, »Mist«, »Planet [wanderer]« und »Mirage« in Zusammenarbeit mit Damien Jalet, die monumentale Skulptur »Throne«, welche 2018 im Louvre ausgestellt wurde, sowie »Ether (Equality)«, eine Installation, die er 2023 auf der Seine enthüllte.

The Japanese artist Kohei Nawa, born in 1975 in Osaka, is considered one of the most innovative sculptors of his generation. After studying sculpture, he completed his PhD at the Kyoto City University of Arts in 2003. Today, he teaches as a professor at the Kyoto University of the Arts and heads the interdisciplinary creative platform Sandwich Inc., which he founded in Kyoto in 2009.

Nawa gained international recognition with his series »PixCell«, in which he explores surface as an interface in the digital age. His works – including »Direction«, »Force«, »Biomatrix« and »Foam« – merge materiality, life and the cosmos. Among his most notable projects are the pavilion »Kohtei«, the performances »Vessel«, »Mist«, »Planet [wanderer]« and »Mirage« in collaboration with Damien Jalet, the monumental sculpture »Throne«, exhibited at the Louvre in 2018, as well as »Ether (Equality)«, an installation unveiled on the Seine in 2023.
