Niko Kumpuvaara

Niko Kumpuvaara ist ein preisgekrönter Akkordeonist, der bereits in vielen europäischen Ländern, China und den Vereinigten Staaten aufgetreten ist. In seinem Solo- und Kammermusik-Repertoire nimmt die Neue Akkordeonmusik einen besonderen Platz ein.

Kumpuvaara gewann den ersten Preis beim renommierten Internationalen Akkordeonwettbewerb Klingenthal und den dritten Preis beim weltweit größten Wettbewerb für zeitgenössische Musik, der Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, für alle Instrumente. Er arbeitete als künstlerischer Leiter des Oulu Music Festivals und des Akkordeonfestivals Sata-Häme Soi. Von 2009 bis 2015 war Kumpuvaara Gastprofessor für Akkordeon an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz. Als Komponist, Arrangeur und Produzent wirkte er sowohl an Film- als auch an Bühnenproduktionen mit, darunter das preisgekrönte Theaterstück »Aleksis Kivi« der Red Nose Company und das im Oktober 2024 uraufgeführte Stück »UKK«, für das Kumpuvaara den Großteil der Musik komponierte.

Niko Kumpuvaara is an award-winning accordionist who has performed in many European countries, China and the United States. New accordion music has a special place in his solo and chamber music repertoire.

Kumpuvaara won first prize at the prestigious Klingenthal International Accordion Competition and third prize at the world’s largest competition for contemporary music, the Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, for all instruments. He has worked as artistic director of the Oulu Music Festival and the Sata-Häme Soi accordion festival. From 2009 to 2015, Kumpuvaara was a visiting professor for accordion at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. As a composer, arranger and producer, he has worked on both film and stage productions, including the Red Nose Company’s award-winning theatre play »Aleksis Kivi«and the play »UKK«, which premiered in October 2024 and for which Kumpuvaara composed most of the music.
