Oliver Mears

Der britische Regisseur Oliver Mears wurde im März 2017 zum Operndirektor der Royal Opera ernannt. Er kam von der Northern Ireland Opera (NIO) zur Royal Opera, deren künstlerischer Leiter er von 2010 bis 2017 war. Er studierte Englisch und Geschichte an der Universität Oxford, wo er auch dem Dramatiker Howard Barker assistierte, bevor er das Londoner Opernhaus Second Movement mitbegründete, für das er zahlreiche ortsspezifische Produktionen inszenierte. Für das NIO inszenierte er »Tosca«, »Der fliegende Holländer«, »Macbeth«, »Salome« und »Agrippina«, sowie »The Turn of the Screw« für die Musikfestivals in Peking und Shanghai. An der Royal Opera inszenierte er »Rigoletto«, »Jephtha« und »The Rape of Lucretia«. Außerdem inszenierte er auch für andere Ensembles, für die Norwegische Nationaloper »L’elisir d’amore«, am Young Vic London »My Dad’s a Birdman«, an der Bergen National Opera »Don Giovanni«, an der Opera North im englischen Leeds »Hänsel und Gretel« und an der Scottish Opera »Eugen Onegin« sowie »Orpheus in der Unterwelt«.

British director Oliver Mears was appointed Opera Director of the Royal Opera in March 2017. He joined the Royal Opera from Northern Ireland Opera (NIO), where he was Artistic Director from 2010 to 2017. He studied English and History at Oxford University, where he also assisted the playwright Howard Barker, before co-founding the London opera company Second Movement, for which he staged numerous site-specific productions. His productions for the NIO include »Tosca«, »The Flying Dutchman«, »Macbeth«, »Salome« and »Agrippina«, as well as »The Turn of the Screw« for the music festivals in Beijing and Shanghai. At the Royal Opera he staged »Rigoletto«, »Jephtha« and »The Rape of Lucretia«. He has also staged productions for other companies, including »L'elisir d'amore« for the Norwegian National Opera, »My Dad's a Birdman« at the Young Vic in London, »Don Giovanni« at Bergen National Opera, »Hansel and Gretel« at Opera North in Leeds and »Eugene Onegin« and »Orpheus in the Underworld« at Scottish Opera.
