Sasha Waltz

Sasha Waltz ist Choreographin, Tänzerin und Regisseurin. Sie studierte Tanz und Choreographie in Amsterdam und New York. Gemeinsam mit Jochen Sandig gründete sie 1993 die Compagnie Sasha Waltz & Guests. Sie ist Mitbegründerin der Sophiensæle (1996) sowie des Radialsystems (2006) in Berlin. Von 1999 bis 2004 war sie Mitglied der Leitung der Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. Die Erschließung innovativer, spartenübergreifender Aufführungs- und Kreationsformen ist ein wichtiger Schwerpunkt ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit, in der sie einen Bogen schlägt von international bekannten Tanzstücken wie der »Travelogue«-Trilogie (1993/1995) oder »Körper« (2000) über Choreographische Opern (»Dido & Aeneas«, 2005) und forschende Dialoge-Projekte (wie »Dialoge 09 – Neues Museum«) bis hin zu aktuellen Arbeiten wie »SYM-PHONIE MMXX« (2022) oder »Beethoven 7« (2023), deren zentrales Moment die synchrone Entwicklung von Choreographie und Musik ist. Parallel engagiert Sasha Waltz sich für den Transfer tänzerischen Wissens und den Tanz als Medium der sozialen und gesellschaftspolitischen Verständigung. Im Jahr 2021 entwickelte sie die Arbeit »In C«, basierend auf Terry Rileys gleichnamiger Komposition, die seither nicht nur erfolgreich national und international aufgeführt wird, sondern sich auch zu einem eigenen System mit weltweit wachsender Community entwickelt hat. Seit Juni 2013 ist Sasha Waltz Mitglied der Akademie der Künste Berlin. Im Jahr 2021 wurde sie vom französischen Kulturministerium zum »Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres« ernannt.

Sasha Waltz is a choreographer, dancer and director. She studied dance and choreography in Amsterdam and New York. Together with Jochen Sandig she founded the company Sasha Waltz & Guests in 1993 and was co-founder of the Sophiensæle (1996) and the Radialsystem (2006), two spaces for performing arts in Berlin. From 2000 to 2004 she was a member of the artistic direction of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. The development of innovative, interdisciplinary forms of performance and creation is an important focus of her artistic work, which ranges from internationally renowned dance pieces such as the »Travelogue« trilogy (1993/1995) or »Körper« (2000) to choreographed operas (e.g. »Dido & Aeneas«, 2005) and exploratory dialogue projects (e.g. »Dialoge 09 – Neues Museum«). In her current choreographic work Waltz concentrates on the condensation of collaborative processes, such as the synchronous development of choreography and music like »SYM-PHONIE MMXX« (2022) or »Beethoven 7« (2023). At the same time Sasha Waltz is committed to the transfer of dance knowledge and dance as a medium of social and socio-political understanding. In 2021, Sasha Waltz created the choreography »In C« based on Terry Riley‘s revolutionary and open score of the same name, which has since not only been successfully performed nationally and internationally, but has also developed into its own system with a growing community. She is a member of the Academy of Arts Berlin since 2013. In 2021 Sasha Waltz was awarded the French cultural order »Commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres«.
