Joel Suárez Gómez

Joel Suárez Gómez wurde 1988 im kubanischen Holguín geboren. Bereits im Alter von neun Jahren begann er in der Escuela Elemental de Ballet Alejo Carpentier zu tanzen und schloss seine Ausbildung an der Escuela Nacional de Ballet in Havanna in den Fächern klassisches Ballett und kubanisch Modern bzw. Folklore ab. Seit Februar 2013 lebt er in Berlin, wo er persönliche Projekte, Kollaborationen und Praktiken entwickelt, während er sein Engagement mit Sasha Waltz & Guests sowie andere künstlerische Beziehungen weiterführt. Interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit, neue performative Praktiken, Analyse, Gemeinschaft und Freundschaft sind die Schlüsselwörter, die seine Arbeit bestimmen. Er strebt nach Räumen und Praktiken, die dezentralisiert, autonom, nachhaltig und nicht invasiv in ihren Mechanismen und Diskursen sind.

Joel Suárez Gómez was born in Holguín, Cuba in 1988. At the age of 9 years, he started studies in the Escuela Elemental de Ballet »Alejo Carpentier« and graduated as a dancer in the Escuela Nacional de Ballet de La Habana in the disciplines of classical ballet, cuban modern technique and cuban folklore. Since February 2013, he has been living in Berlin, where he has developed personal projects, collaborations and practices, while continuing his engagement with Sasha Waltz & Guests and other artistic relationships. Interdisciplinary collaboration, new performative practices, analysis, community and friendship are the keywords that define his work. He strives for spaces and practices that are decentralised, autonomous, sustainable and non-invasive in their mechanisms and discourses.
