Salzburg Easter Festival 2027 60th Anniversary & Continuation of »Der Ring des Nibelungen« with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko

The Salzburg Easter Festival will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027 and, in collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker and its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, will continue its new production of Richard Wagner’s tetralogy »Der Ring des Nibelungen«. In »Die Walküre«, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, Lise Davidsen makes her international role debut as Brünnhilde, whilst Christopher Maltman sings the part of Wotan. Kirill Petrenko will also conduct Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, with Martha Argerich, Emmanuelle Haïm and Lahav Shani among the guest artists in the other concerts.

Nikolaus Bachler: »Für die Neuinszenierungen haben wir mit dem »Ring« und »Moses und Aron« Werke gewählt, die in ihren musikalischen Mitteln revolutionär waren. Beide Werke knüpfen an den uralten Erfahrungsschatz der Menschheit an und holen daraus Stoffe hervor, die für ihre Zeit brandaktuelle Konstellationen behandeln. Beide Stücke beschreiben Gesellschaftsentwürfe für eine Welt, deren geistige Fundamente zerschellt sind oder die im Laufe der Handlung zugrunde gehen.«

Salzburg Easter Festival 2026: Start of a new »RING DES NIBELUNGEN« with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko

The Salzburg Easter Festival will open a new chapter from 2026: with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the founding orchestra will return to the Salzach. For the first five years of the residency, Artistic Director Nikolaus Bachler and Kirill Petrenko, Chief Conductor of the top Berlin orchestra since 2019, will present new productions of two works: Richard Wagner’s tetralogy »Der Ring des Nibelungen« and Arnold Schoenberg’s only grand opera »Moses und Aron«. The new »Ring« will be staged by Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, with Christian Gerhaher making his role debut as Wotan. Kirill Petrenko will also conduct Gustav Mahler’s monumental 8th Symphony, while the other concerts will feature violinist Janine Jansen and conductors Daniel Harding and Tugan Sokhiev, among others.
